McDonald’s to be a Joint Employer with Franchises

hamburgers_for_saleThe efforts to have a union of fast-food workers shed light when National Labor Relations Board decided to make McDonald’s a joint employer of workers from their franchisees.

This came from the NLRB’s general counsel and not from the agency’s board. McDonald’s is planning to contest this decision because they have no role or control in the employment practices of their franchisees.
Heather Smedstad, McDonald’s SVP for Human Resources, said that this decision would be a concern for business individuals.

International Franchise Association President and CEO Steve Caldeira said that this opinion would threaten the relationship between franchisors and franchisees.
