Since he took office, President Donald Trump has waged a ‘trade war’ with companies and countries who have trade deals with the country as a means to create jobs at home. However, some cities will feel the negative impacts of this ‘trade war’ and it includes Austin. In the assessment of the Brookings Institute, more than 65,000 jobs in Austin’s export sector will be affected by the trade war since these jobs depend heavily on trade. Should other countries retaliate against Trump’s uncertain trade policy, local workers in the trade industry in areas like Austin will be heavily affected. At least 13% of Texas’ overall economy is dependent on exports and so far, it is still increasing by 5.6% per year.
