Lake recreation: The original plan for Lady Bird Lake was to make it a recreation area for the city. During the 1970s, a network of trails along the lake shore was completed. This became a major attraction in Austin and attracted visitors from all over the world. When the City Council of the city decided to rename the lake to honor the First Ladies who had lived in Austin for so many years, the Lake was renamed Lady Bird Johnson Park.
